Hear from Charmaine Leung, author of 17A Keong Saik Road, as she recollects the stories of old Chinatown and its people. These include her accounts of customs and rituals—the sor hei (梳起) hairdressing ritual, da siu yern (打小人) to ward off evil spirits, and celebration of Seven Maiden’s Festival (七姐诞)—and the stories of Cantonese ladies who lived and worked in Keong Saik.

About The Speaker:
Charmaine Leung is a Singaporean writer who has lived in Hong Kong for 15 years. She first became passionate about the literary arts while working as a theatre manager in Jubilee Hall in the 1990s. Her writing focuses on human relationships and the dynamics in these relationships brought about by change.
17A Keong Saik Road, a creative non-fiction work, is Charmaine’s first book. Since the launch of her book in 2017, Charmaine has been featured by The Straits Times, The Business Times and Lianhe Zaobao on her growing up years in Keong Saik Road. She also anchored Mediacorp’s Tuesday Report documentary on Chinatown and Keong Saik, and was a panellist on ‘Women In Singapore’s History’ at the Singapore Writers Festival 2017.
